St. Joseph's School School Otahuhu

Room 8

Welcome to Room 8!

This term, Room 8 are learning about New Zealand’s native birds. We have learnt about their habitats, what they like to eat and why some birds are endangered. Room 8 have also been learning about the Māori kākahu (cloak). Whaea Michelle lent us her korowai – one type of Māori cloak – and we had the chance to try it on.

We have learnt that feathers can be a very important part of the kākahu because they tell us about a person’s mana (power). Everyone in Room 8 made a feather and added it to our class kākahu. Then we wrote sentences to describe what we had learnt.

Everyone enjoyed visiting Auckland Zoo and seeing lots of birds including the kiwi, kea and blue penguin! We have made collages of our favourite New Zealand birds.
